It was such a hard pill to swallow when the first time I heard that my partner has schizophrenia. But instead of feeling overwhelmed, I decided to become an active part of his support system. Now, after many years together, I know that there are certain things that have been helpful in supporting my partner and helping him live well with schizophrenia. Though you might think that your partner should be the one to take all the love, instead, be sure that you also love yourself. Today, I’m going to share my tips and a bit of challenge that I have faced in this journey so that you can learn and support your partner with schizophrenia or a friend better.
Arm Up With the Right Education
Let’s face it. We have nothing sort of near-perfect understanding of schizophrenia. We can read a lot, but applying it in real life is hard. Hence, arm yourself with the right knowledge on how to support someone who has schizophrenia. Pay attention to what your partner says and figure out ways of understanding them better. Read up as much information as possible about the condition and talk to others with schizophrenia or the experts.
Be Patient and Empathetic
When your partner is struggling, it can be difficult to stay patient and calm. But it’s highly advised that you set a good example for them by remaining as understanding and supportive as possible. Remind yourself of how challenging living with schizophrenia can be. Show empathy and compassion to your partner, even when they cannot show it to you. The key is to be understanding and provide them with the best support you can.
Create a Safe and Supportive Environment
Creating an environment that is both safe and supportive for someone with schizophrenia is key to helping them live well. Make sure your home is free of judgment or ridicule. Establish boundaries and be clear about the expectations of your partner. And when someone tries to talk negatively about your partner, remind them of the struggles they’re dealing with and be sure to stand up for your partner. In addition, encourage them to take part in activities they enjoy, such as outdoor activities like cycling, hiking, or swimming.
Work Together to Develop a Treatment Plan
Developing a plan of action with your partner will help them better manage their condition and live well with schizophrenia. Talk to a doctor about medications and lifestyle modifications that can help. Also, seek out support groups and therapy sessions to help your partner cope with their condition and find emotional support from others who have been through similar experiences. These steps will ensure that your partner gets the best care possible.
Stay Connected
Lastly, don’t forget to stay connected with your partner. Make sure you’re both spending time together and engaging in activities that bring you joy. Even if it’s just a few hours out of the day, stay connected with your partner and let them know you are there for them. Communication is key, and it’s important to ensure that your partner gets the support they need. Living with schizophrenia can be challenging, but with the right support and care, your partner can live a fulfilling and meaningful life.
By arming yourself with the right education, being patient and empathetic, creating a safe and supportive environment, working together to develop a treatment plan, and staying connected with your partner, you can ensure that both of you get the help and support you need.
